I know that when my 14 year old son gets just a few years older - he will think that sharing a birthday on St. Paddy's day is just the coolest thing and I am almost sure that the array of party's or parades that he will be attending, he will assume that because it is his birthday - he can party until his heart is content! Hmm - I have a few years to fix this!
Who is St. Patrick? St. Patrick was the Patron Saint that who brought Christianity to Ireland. Historians have also said that St. Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland. Ok, It is true that there are not any snakes in Ireland -(maybe on planes but not in Ireland). I actually think that the snakes are more of a symbolic gesture than an actual removal of snakes. Most of what I know about St. Patrick is his two works, the Confessio, a spiritual autobiography, and his Epistola, a denunciation of British mistreatment of Irish christians. The first St. Patrick's day was not held in Ireland but in the United States.
Everything else gets commercialized - Yup, its true. When my kids think about St. Patrick's Day - they think, Green, parades, pinching, leprechauns and beer, beer and more beer ( very funny!)
And... if you are still unsure about what St. Patricks Day means to most - then I have included a dandy video clip!
If you are looking to attend the parade in NYC - then you might want to leave like umm - now, for tomorrows festivities.
