That is it! As of Monday April 2nd, the widening of 20th avenue in Whitestone, NY is set to start. This project was in the works by the DOT for years and now it seems that the residents on 20th avenue have lost the fight. The proposed plan was to take 10 feet of the property aligning 20th avenue but it was later settled to take 3 feet.
"A statement issued by the Department of Transportation said that while the agency empathizes with homeowners, the city is building on its own legally titled street property. “The decision has been made to widen the street to the minimal amount required to alleviate the congestion and make improvements in this area,” it said." As of Monday, the normal two lanes of traffic will be condensed into one lane (which don't ask me how they will do this) and the construction has been noted to take nine months to complete (I am thinking more like one year). There will be no sidewalks for people to walk on until late fall. So, take this as advanced warning to bypass this route all together.
