Tudors - a dying breed..
One of my favorite style homes built is the Tudor. Anytime that I walk into a Tudor I feel its old charm, I feel the majesty of the castle feeling as if it was from the medevil times. The Tudor style homes are just the type of homes that you can't knock down (Ok, you can, but it is almost a sin to knock it down) and put a new home there - you should restore. To restore a Tudor is a tough job, but in the long run it will pay off.
The builders in my area are were knocking down alot of homes and replacing them with the same Colonial Stucco style homes, that the homes were honestly starting to look like they were made from a cookie cutter. The interior of the new style homes lack the stucco walls, parquet floors, arched doorways, high ceilings and stained glass windows. The newer homes walls are sheetrock and there is no architecture charm in or out of the house. They all look the same.
When I went searching for Tudors in our MLS system I was a bit shocked. In ALL Of Queens NY there were only 153 Tudor homes, attached or semi-attached. Out of the 153 Tudors that were listed on MLS I would say that only 90 were ACTUAL Tudors (sometimes agents don't know the difference between Capes, Colonials or Townhomes).
This is a Tudor. What makes this a Tudor is the steep pitched roof, the long narrow window, the high peaks and the Tudor wood "hair timbering". Back in the "Tudor Era" the Tudor homes were built to have the wood framing exposed. In between the timbering was daub - a mixture of sand, clay and dung. This was then smeared over the framing. The wood timber were treated with black tar. Many Tudor style homes that are around today are just replicas - and the "hair timbering" is only for effect.
This home above is located on Tudor Road in Jamaica Estates. It was sold in August 2005 for 1.150 Million.
This is another magnificent Tudor located in Flushing, 11358. As you can see from the front of
the home the roof pitch is steep, there is "hair timbering", there is a large Chimney, brick and stucco front - this is a true Tudor. This home is currently available for an asking price of $1.3 Million.

Hey, I love Tudors as well. They always remind me of a home designed by Keebler elves and something about that makes it feel warm and inviting.
